Behind the Scenes - Weeks of May 28 & June 4


Our LAST Blog of the 2011-2012 School Year...


Weekly Spotlight:
*No school on Monday - Memorial Day.
*Adverb and Preposition Test on Wednesday.
*Bring a Board Game to school on Wednesday.
*School Talent Show on Wednesday at 1:15.
*Chapter 7, lesson 2 Science quiz on Thursday.
*Bowling Field Trip on Thursday.
*P.T.O. Field Games, Picnic, and Assembly on Monday, June 4.
*Last Day of School on Tuesday, June 5.


Homeroom Happenings:
Science - This week, we will conclude our Earth Science Unit with a study of "The Rock Cycle."  The children will have a "fill in the diagram" quiz on Thursday.  This will not be an open book or notes quiz.


Social Studies - We will finish our study of the Tlingit tribe.  Then we will focus on current events using Time For Kids Magazine.


English - The students will take the Adverb and Preposition Test on Wednesday.  English enrichment projects will also be due on test day. These will be the last English grades.


Reading - We will finish the school year by watching the sequel to Sarah, Plain and Tall called Skylark.


Mrs. Sulima's Math Class - This whole week, we will be learning about algebra.  The children will have homework each night.  Friday will be our last math class.

Behind the Scenes - Week of May 21


Weekly Spotlight:
*Spelling Pretest on Monday.
*Library Summer Reading Program Presentation on Monday.
*Chapter 12 Social Studies Test on Tuesday.
*All library books/magazines are due back by Wednesday.
*PBIS Assembly on Wednesday.
*Spelling Test (LAST ONE) on Friday.
*Fourth Grade Talent Show on Friday.
*Chapter 7, lesson 1 Science Quiz on Friday.


Coming Attractions:
*No School on Monday, May 28 - Memorial Day.
*Wacky Wednesday on May 30.  Students may bring a board game to play with a friend in the afternoon.
*"Take Me Bowling" Thursday on May 31.  Fourth grade students will take a bowling field trip in the afternoon.
*Film Festival Friday on June 1.  We will watch a movie in the afternoon.
*Marvelous Monday on June 4.  The children will be provided a fun-filled day by our wonderful P.T.O.  We will have field day games, picnic lunch, and an afternoon special assembly.
*"That's All Folks" Friday on June 5.  This is our last day of school.  Bring a pen and your yearbook or an autograph book for our Fourth Grade autographing session.


Homeroom Happenings:
Science - The children will learn about and observe igneous rocks, sedimentary rocks, and metamorphic rocks.  Students will take an open book quiz on minerals and the 3 types of rocks on Friday.  Next week, we will end the year with a study of the rock cycle.


Social Studies - On Tuesday, the children will take our last social studies test of the school year.  This test will cover the three lessons in chapter 12.  We will end our study of the West by exploring the Tlingit Tribe.  Next week, the children will catch up on some current events with our Time For Kids magazines.


Spelling - This will be our last week of spelling.  The children will be working with a list of summer words this week.  We will still take a pretest on Monday, and the final test will be on Friday.  The children may choose to write in print or cursive on Friday.


English - We will continue to work through our unit on Adverbs and Prepositions.  This week the children will learn about Negatives and Prepositional Phrases.  We will fill out a "how to study" sheet on Friday for our final English test on Wednesday, May 30.


Reading - The children will take a Sarah, Plain and Tall comprehension and vocabulary test on Wednesday.  Please have your child review their vocabulary sheet.  They will be allowed to use their book during the test.  The children will also receive a readers' theater script on Monday.  The script is a portion of the novel Skylark.  This is the sequel to Sarah, Plain and Tall.  We will read our readers' theater on Thursday.


Mrs. Sulima's Math Class:
*Monday - Students will stay in their homerooms to take Part 1 of a placement test for next year's math groupings.
*Tuesday - Students will stay in their homerooms to take Part 2 of a placement test for next year's math groupings.
*Wednesday - No math due to PBIS Assembly.
*Thursday - Begin unit on Algebra ~ Expressions and Equations.
*Friday - Algebra ~ Isolating Variables.

Behind the Scenes- Week of May 14


Weekly Spotlight:

*Bowling Field Trip on Thursday, May 31 (afternoon).
*End of the Year P.T.O. Picnic on Monday, June 4.
*Last Day of School on Tuesday, June 5.  Dismissal at 9:30.


Homeroom Happenings:
Science - We will begin our final unit of the school year on Rocks and Minerals.  The students will be involved in tests to identify minerals.  We will also begin learning about the 3 types of rocks.


Social Studies - Our study of the Western region continues.  We will focus on the resources of the West.  The children will have a test on the Western Region on Tuesday, May 22.  We will be taking our 50 state test on Friday.  Your child will have a word bank of state names and capital names.  They will be given a map and will need to correctly locate and identify all 50 states.  The capital cities will be bonus points (10 correct capitals = 1 point).


English - We will begin our final unit on Adverbs and Prepositions. This week our lessons include:  What is an adverb?, comparing with adverbs, using good and well, and negatives.  This unit only has 5 lessons.  Our test will probably be on Thursday, May 24.


Spelling - The children will take the pretest on Monday.  On Friday, the children will take the test including the bonus words.  This test will need to be written in cursive.


Reading - Our reading strategy for next week is making inferences. Readers must make inferences, or "read between the lines", when the author doesn't tell the reader everything. Readers can do this by applying what they already know to story clues given by the author.


Math - All week, we will be working on ratios and percents.  Please have your child review the notes we are taking in class each evening.  Our final unit for the year will be algebra.

Homeroom Happenings:
Science - We have completed our unit on Simple Machines.  The children will be taking a test on chapter 17 on Thursday.  Our next unit will be on Rocks and Minerals.
To prepare for the science test:
*Define work, simple machine, lever, and fulcrum
*How does a lever change the way work is done?
*Know the 3 classes of levers and examples of each.
*Define pulley and Wheel-and-axle
*How does a pulley change the way work is done?
*How does a wheel-and-axle change the way work is done?
*Define inclined plane, screw, and wedge
*How does an inclined plane change the way work in done?
*How does a screw change the way work is done?
*How does a wedge change the way work is done?


Social Studies - We will continue our study of the West region.  The children will explore the varied climates of the West.


English - The children are doing a fantastic job on writing their "candy bar" persuasive essays.  We will hold our election sometime in the next week or two.  May the best candy bar win!  We will also take our final English pretest this week.  Watch your child's English pocket for their final contract of fourth grade.


Spelling - Our spelling pretest will be on Monday.  The children will take the spelling test on Friday.  They will write in cursive.  This test will include the 2 bonus words.


Reading - Our reading target for the week is to identify topic, main idea, and supporting details.  Topic is what the whole text is about. The main ideas are important points about each topic.  Each paragraph can have its own main idea.  Supporting details are facts and examples that support each main idea.


Mrs. Sulima's Math Class:
Monday - No math today due to MAP testing.
Tuesday - Dividing Decimals by Whole Numbers
Wednesday - Dividing Decimals by Decimals and Estimating Decimal Quotients
Thursday - No math due to Argonne Field Trip for Bell and Cavoto.
Friday - Estimating with Money and Quiz on Multiplying and Dividing Decimals (open-book and notes)
