Homeroom Happenings:
Science - We will finish our lesson on sources of electricity. The children will explore electromagnets & magnetic fields this week. At the end of the week, we will begin our next lesson on uses of electricity.
Social Studies - Students will finish their desert slide shows this week. These slide shows will be on display for the spring open house. We will also work on lesson three which explores oil and technology. The children will fill out a "how to study" sheet on Friday. Our chapter 10 test will be on Wednesday, March 21.
English - The children will take the next English pretest. We will begin a new unit during the week of March 19.
Spelling - NEW SPELLING PROCEDURE for third trimester!!! The children will be taking a spelling pretest on Monday. Students that receive 100% will become challenge spellers. They will not take a test on Friday, but they will need to use their chosen words to complete 3 activities. These activities will be due Friday. There will be two bonus words on our spelling tests now. Children can earn 1/2 point for each bonus word spelled correctly.
Reading - Next
week, students will read about Gloria Estefan, a famous singer whose
acts of kindness have made her a hero to many people. Our strategy
will be making judgments. Making judgments involves deciding whether
or not a character's actions are appropriate for a situation. Readers
can ask themselves, “Do I agree with this? Is this right or fair?

Monday - Review of factors, prime, composite, and prime factorization. Greatest Common Factor (GCF).
Tuesday - ISAT Testing, Part 3. The children will complete 2 Extended Response problems.
Wednesday - No math due to Science ISAT testing.
Thursday - Fraction Sense and Fractions in lowest terms.
Friday - Chapter 4, lessons 1-4 Open-book quiz. Begin lesson on LCM and LCD.

Science - This week our focus will be magnetism. We will explore magnetic fields, electromagnets, and motors. The children will have an open book quiz on chapter 15, lesson 2 on Thursday.
Social Studies - We will continue working on our Desert Slide Shows. You will be able to view your child's slide show during our spring open house in April. Our 39-State Test will be on Tuesday. The children will need to know correct location and spelling of all 39 states in the Northeast, Southeast, Midwest, and Southwest. Students can earn a bonus point for 10 correct capitals.
English - As ISAT testing quickly approaches, we will continue to work on our reading extended responses.
Spelling - This will be our last spelling test of second trimester. It will also be our last test with vocabulary words. We will begin spelling pretesting again in the third trimester. All words on third trimester tests will be spelling words.
Reading - This week, we will be using the predict/infer strategy, as well as cause and effect. Thinking about story events and personal knowledge helps readers predict likely events. With cause and effect, students will focus on why story events happen and what happens as a result.
