Sulima's Last Scoop: May 24 - June 2

Weekly Reminders:

I would like to thank the Arlt family, Spencer family, Ferreri family, Burrows family, Seitz family, Mandziara family, Veverka family, Stoppelman family, Meyer family, Baer family, Maghirang family, Uhlen family, and Cione family for volunteering to develop rolls of film. Please try to get the film in by Monday. This way I can sort the pictures by student before we begin working on our memory books on Tuesday.

Yearbooks: Will be handed out to students on June 2nd. Any students who did not purchase a yearbook may do so on a first-come-first-serve basis on June 2nd; they will go on sale after morning announcements. The cost will be $10.00 and children wishing to purchase should have exact amount. Checks can be made out to Prairieview. There is a limited supply. Prairieview yearbook orders were not paid for at registration. A flyer was sent out on November 12, 2009 and orders were due by Tuesday, December 9, 2009.

School Picnic: Lunch will be a hot dog, chips, water, and an ice cream treat. If your child needs more or does not want a hot dog, please send them with a sack lunch.

Homeroom Happenings:
Science - We will finish chapter 8 with a lesson on fossils. The children will not be taking notes on this lesson because we will not be having a quiz.
*
Social Studies - We will take our chapter 13 open-book/notes quiz on Monday. This will conclude our study of the Western Region.
*
Spelling - We will not have a spelling unit this week. All grades are in for spelling.
*
English - We will continue our study of adverbs. This week we will learn about negatives and prepositional phrases. We will not have a quiz or test on this unit, but the children will be doing graded assignments from the English workbook.
*
Reading - Our mystery unit will continue. The children have been doing a wonderful job working in their agencies on drawing conclusion and supporting these conclusions with evidence.

Accelerated Math Menu:
Monday - No math due to Lakeview choir concert.
Tuesday - Understanding ratios and equivalent ratios. No homework.
Wednesday - Exploring scale and understanding percents. No homework.
Thursday - This will be our last day of math. Relating percents, decimals, and fractions. No homework.
Friday - No math.
Tuesday - School picnic. No math.
Wednesday - Last day of school. No math.

Sulima's Scoop - Week of May 17

Weekly Reminders:
*No spelling pretest this week. It is a review week.

*Beginning Band Concert on Tuesday evening at Lakeview.

Homeroom Happenings:
Science - We will begin chapter 8, lesson 2. This lesson reviews the layers of the Earth. It also covers how Earth's surface changes. We will have an open-book quiz on Friday.

Social Studies - Our visit to the Western region is coming to an end. This week we will learn about exploration and growth in the West. We will also look at examples of businesses and tourist locations in the West. We will have an open-book quiz over chapter 13 on Monday, April 24.

Spelling - We will be working with lesson 35 this week. This will be the last spelling lesson of fourth grade. Lesson 35 is a review unit. The children should focus on the rules of each lesson. The lesson 35 test asks the children to identify the misspelled word in each row.

English - The children will take the Unit 6 Pronoun test on Tuesday. All enrichment projects are due the day of the test. On Wednesday, we will begin our final unit on adverbs and prepositions. We will not pretest or test on this final unit. The children will have graded assignments each day though.

Reading - Last week was so busy, with finishing our wonderful poetry project, that we were unable to begin our mystery unit. We will begin this week! The children will be reading, listening, and watching many mysteries throughout this unit. We will be discussing the elements of a mystery and important "detective" vocabulary. Throughout this study we will also review all the reading strategies that we have covered in fourth grade.

Monday - Dividing decimals. H.W. Daily Review 94 (#1-12).
Tuesday - No math due to math placement tests. H.W. Finish Daily Review 94 (#1-12).
Wednesday - Dividing decimals by decimals & review for checkpoint. H.W. Review for checkpoint on Friday.
Thursday - No math due to math placement tests. H.W. Review for checkpoint.
Friday - Math checkpoint (open-book and open-notes). H.W. None.

Sulima's Scoop - Week of May 10

Weekly Reminders:
*All students need to bring a sack lunch and drink on Monday. We will be eating in the classroom before we go to the Robert Crown Center. Students may want to bring a second snack for when we return in the afternoon.

Homeroom Happenings:
Science - We will begin chapter 8. This chapter continues our Earth Science study. We will begin this chapter by exploring some of Earth's landforms. An open-book quiz on this lesson will be on Thursday.

Social Studies - The children will take the chapter 12 test on Tuesday. Look over these items to review for the test:
*Key vocabulary - timberline, geyser, magma, volcano, lava, tundra, frigid, rain shadow, greenhouse, livestock, and reforest.

*Important Places - Rocky Mountains, Continental Divide, Yellowstone National Park, Mt. McKinley, Death Valley, Great Basin, Mt. Waialeale, and Cascade Range.
*Identify the largest system of mountains in the United States.
*Compare and Contrast mountain ranges of the West.
*Identify which mountain ranges have volcanoes.
*Compare geysers to volcanoes.
*Recognize names of mountain ranges in the West.
*Compare and contrast the climates of Hawaii and California.
*Name the different climates of the West and give an example of each.
*Identify states in the West with extreme weather.
*Explain how the rain shadow works.
*Identify some of the resources of the West.
*Identify places where agricultural products are grown in the West.
*Locate areas of the West that have important fishing industries.
*Explain how people benefit from the resources of the West.

Spelling - We will not take a spelling pretest this week due to gym, Jr. Achievement, and our field trip to Robert Crown on Monday. Our spelling test will be on Friday as soon as all the students arrive. Please have your child practice their words in cursive.

English - Our study of pronouns will continue. We will review pronouns and homonyms on Tuesday. We will fill out our "how to study" sheet on Wednesday. The test will be on Tuesday, May 18.

Reading - We will begin my favorite unit of the year ~ Mysteries! The children will be reading, watching, and listening to many mysteries. We will review the elements of a mystery. The class will also review all our reading strategies throughout this unit. The children will also have time during silent reading to use our classroom computers to work on their poetry books. All poetry books are due on Friday, May 14.
