Behind the Scenes - Week of April 29


Weekly Spotlight:
*Spelling pretest on Monday.

Homeroom Happenings:
Science - We will finish lesson 1 with an activity to explore switches.  The children will take a circuit drawing quiz on Thursday.  On Friday, the children will take an open-book/notes quiz on Chapter 15, lesson 1.

Social Studies - The children will continue exploring the Western Region.

Spelling - Our pretest will be on Monday.  The children will take either a challenge test or regular spelling test on Friday.

English - We will begin our next unit on Pronouns.  The children will explore what is a pronoun, subject pronouns, object pronouns, and using I and me.

Reading - We will do a variety of activities this week.  The children should continue to review the MAP reading vocabulary that was sent home last week.  Also, it might be beneficial for the children to review their vocabulary spiral.  On Monday and Tuesday our focus will be on propaganda.  Please help your child find advertisements (in newspapers, magazines, on the Internet).  They should look at the types of propaganda and try to identify which type of propaganda the advertisements represent.  

Mrs. Sulima's Math Spotlight:
Monday - Quiz on Chapter 13.  HW:  None.
Tuesday - Algebraic Expressions and Equations.  HW:  WB 156.
Wednesday - No math due to MAP testing.
Thursday - Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication, and Division Equations.
Friday - No math due to MAP testing.

Behind the Scenes - Week of April 22


Weekly Spotlight:
*Spelling pretest on Monday.
*Spring Open House/Book Fair on Tuesday from 6:30-8:00.
*2nd Session of Jr. Achievement on Wednesday.

*Spelling test on Friday.
*Midterm on Friday.

Homework:
In an effort to make the transition to 5th grade as smooth as possible, the fourth grade teachers will be enforcing the 5th grade policy for late work during the month of May. The policy is as follows:

-Any assignment that is late, but not taken for a grade, will receive a late slip. The student will have one point taken out of his/her homework bank. (NO CHANGE)

-Any assignment that is late and taken for a grade will receive a late slip, but no points will be lost from the homework bank. If the assignment is turned in one day late, the final grade will be reduced by 10%. If the assignment is more than one day late, but turned in before the unit test, the final grade will be reduced by 25%. If the assignment is not turned in before the unit test, the final grade will be a zero.

Homeroom Happenings:
Science - The children have explored series circuits.  This week we will focus on parallel circuits, insulators, and conductors.

Social Studies - We will continue our trip through the 5 regions of the United States by visiting the West.  The children will fill out a map of the West on Tuesday.  It will be due on Wednesday.

Spelling - The children will take a spelling pretest on Monday.  On Friday, they will take the regular or challenge test depending on the pretest.  

English - We will take our next pretest this week.  We will not start the unit until the week of April 29.  This week, the children will choose their enrichment options.

Reading - Our focus will be literary elements this week.  We will use literature to review and explore elements of plot, foreshadowing, point of view, conflict, theme, mood, and much more.

Monday - Ratios as Fractions and Equivalent Ratios.  HW:  WB 147.
Tuesday - Exploring Scale and Proportions.  HW:  WB 148.
Wednesday - Relating Fractions to Percents and Percents to Decimals.  HW:  WB 150 and 151.
Thursday - Find the Percent of a Number.  HW:  WB 152.

Behind the Scenes - Week of April 15


Weekly Spotlight:
*Spelling pretest on Monday.
*Inventions and Invention Packet (with colored diagram) due Tuesday.
*39 state test on Tuesday.
*Invention "Note-Card" speeches due Wednesday.
*First Jr. Achievement Session on Wednesday.
*Open House/Book Fair on Thursday, 6:30-8:00.
*Spelling test on Friday.
*Chapter 10 Social Studies Test.

Homeroom Happenings:
Science - We will continue our study of electricity.  This week and next week, we will explore the differences between series and parallel circuits.  The children will also learn how to draw a circuit diagram and create series and parallel circuits with batteries, light bulbs, and wires.  Please have your child review their notes each night.

Social Studies - The children will take the 39 state test on Tuesday.  They need to know the location and spelling of all 39 states.  If they would like to earn some bonus points, they may also write the capital for each state.  Each capital will be worth 1/10 of a point.  We will also fill out our "how to study" for chapter 10 on Tuesday.  The children will take the chapter 10 test on Friday.

Spelling - Our pretest will be on Monday and our test will be on Friday.  The children may choose to write in cursive or print.

English - We are working on our "Personal Hero" 4-paragraph expository essays.  These will be displayed during open house.

Reading - Our American Hero brochures are done.  We will spend our reading time this week working on our Invention descriptions and Invention speeches.  On Wednesday and Thursday, the children will be giving brief speeches about their invention.  They will need to include the following:
Introduction/Hook 
Name of the invention
What problem it solves
How it works
Brief description of how it was made and supplies used.
The students may have some fun with their speech by making it into a commercial with catchy slogans or sayings.

Mrs. Sulima's Math Spotlight:
Monday - Dividing Fractions by Fractions.  HW:  WB 73.
Tuesday - Dividing Whole Numbers by Fractions & Dividing Fractions by Whole Numbers.  HW:  WB 72 (evens) & WB 74 (evens).
Wednesday -  Dividing with Mixed Numbers.  HW:  WB 75 (evens) and 76 (odds). 
Thursday - Estimating Products and Quotients with Mixed Numbers.  HW:  WB 77 and quiz tomorrow.
Friday -   Chapter 6, lesson 8-12 quiz today.  HW:  None.
***No test will be given on Chapter 6.  We will move onto a short chapter on ratios and percents on Monday, April 22.***

Behind the Scenes - Week of April 8


Weekly Spotlight:

*Math Parent-Teacher Conferences on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday.
*No school on Tuesday - Institute Day.
*OLSAT testing on Thursday from 10:00-11:00.

Homeroom Happenings:
Science - We will continue our study of electricity.  The children will read about static and current electricity. Students should review their notes each evening.

Social Studies - Our trip to the Southwest will continue.  We will read about resources from the Southwest.  Don't forget the the 39 state test will be on April 16.

English - We are writing a four-paragraph essay about our personal hero.  

Spelling - Due to our crazy 3-days of school, we will not take a pretest this week.  All the children will be working with the same set of words.  They will have time on Monday to begin their activities for the week.  The test will be on Thursday.  During fourth quarter the children may choose to write in print or cursive on the spelling tests.  There will also be 2 bonus words on the spelling test.  Children will earn 1 point each for the 2 bonus words.

Reading - The children are finishing their "American Hero" brochures.  These will be displayed for open house.

Mrs. Sulima's Math Class:
Monday - Multiply fractions and Whole Numbers.  HW:  WB pg. 65 (evens)
Tuesday - No school.
Wednesday - Multiplying Mixed numbers.  HW:  WB pg. 69 and open book/notes quiz tomorrow.
Thursday - Open book/notes quiz on chapter 6, lessons 1-7. (Multiplying fractions, Multiplying fractions and whole numbers, and Multiplying Mixed Numbers)  HW:  Bonus sheet due Monday, if not finished in class.
Friday - No school.
