Sulima's Scoop - Final Week of School

Weekly Reminders:
*Movie Theater Monday on June 1st. If you have a G movie that we could watch that day, please let me know.
*Last Day of Math on Tuesday.
*Students may bring in a board game to school on Tuesday, June 2nd.
*Last Day of Language Arts on Wednesday.
*Beach Party Assembly for fourth grade on Wednesday, June 3rd. Wear your Hawaiian gear.
*School Picnic on Thursday, June 4th.
*Last day of school on Friday, June 5th. Bring a pen and your memory book/yearbook to get student and teacher autographs.

PTO Picnic: On Thursday, the PTO will be providing lunch for the students. Each student will get one hot dog, a bag of chips, a bottle of water, and an ice cream treat. If your child does not eat hot dogs or needs more food than what is being provided, please send in a small sack lunch.

Summer Birthdays: If your child has a summer birthday and would like to celebrate with us, they may do so any day this week. If you are sending in a birthday treat to share with the class, please continue to send in healthier choices. Thank you!

YEARBOOKS will be handed out to students on June 5th. Any student who did not purchase a yearbook may do so on a first-come-first-serve basis on June 5th. They will go on sale after morning announcements. The cost will be $10.00. Children wishing to purchase should have the exact amount. Checks can be made out to Prairieview. There is a limited supply. Prairieview yearbook orders were not paid for at registration. A flier was sent out in November, and orders were due by Monday, December 1st.

Classroom Happenings:
Science - We will finish fourth grade science with a quick study of simple machines.

Social Studies - The students are working on a coat of arms for the western region. They are researching the climate, resources, landforms, and tourist attractions of the West. These will be put in our region scrapbook. We will also add a couple more items to our West section to finish our region scrapbooks.

Accelerated Math - We will finish our study of ratio and percent on Monday. In math on Tuesday, we will play a math game. Tuesday will be our last day of math. I will miss all of my math students, and I wish them the best of luck in math next year.

Spelling - We are now finished with spelling.

English - The children will finish writing their own picture book this week. We will share our picture books with each other on Wednesday. Wednesday will be our last language arts class.

Reading - Keep reading all summer. Please remember that you are invited to participate in the Lakeview Library summer program. Check out the LV library website soon for more information about this program.

Sulima's Scoop - Weeks of May 26 and June 1

Weekly Reminders:
*No school on Monday, May 25 - Memorial Day.
*On Tuesday, May 26, we will visit Lakeview library for our final turn in day and to thank Mrs. Hagensee and Mrs. Wilson for allowing us to visit.
*Permission Slip to watch Jumanji due ASAP.
*Fourth Grade Bowling Trip on the afternoon of Friday, May 29.

Classroom Happenings:
Science - We will finish our chapter on forces and motion early this week. Then we will move onto simple machines.

Social Studies - The students are working on a coat of arms for the western region. They are researching the climate, resources, landforms, and tourist attractions of the West. These will be put in our region scrapbook.

Accelerated Math - We will work through our last chapter this week. The chapter covers ratio and percent. The children will not have any homework unless they do not finish their in-class work.

Spelling - We are now finished with spelling.

English - The children will be writing their own picture book this week. We are following the format of a book called Simon Say... The children need to choose a subject to write their book about. Examples include: animals, plants, states, countries, sports teams, tourist attractions, famous people, games, books, etc. We will work on these books all week.

Reading - We will continue our Chris Van Allsburg study this week. One of the activities is to watch the movie of "Jumanji". This movie is rated PG. A permission slip was sent home on Friday. Please sign and return as soon as possible.

Sulima's Scoop - Week of May 18

Weekly Reminders:

*All-School Concert at 1:15 on Thursday.

*Lesson 34 spelling test on Friday.

Plan Ahead:
*No school on Monday, May 25 - Memorial Day.
*Fourth Grade Bowling Trip on Friday, May 29 in the afternoon.

Classroom Happenings:
Science - We will take an open book quiz on chapter 15, lesson 4 on Monday. The children will not take a test on this chapter. We will move right into chapter 16 - Forces and Motion.

Social Studies - We are finishing our study of the Southwest region this week. The children are working on a desert postage stamp project. Midweek we will begin our final region - The West.

Accelerated Math - We will begin chapter 8 on Monday. No pretest will be given for this chapter. I will be covering the important lessons this week with a checkpoint review on Friday. We will cover multiplying and dividing decimals by 10, 100, and 1,000, estimating the products of a whole number and a decimal, multiplying a decimal by a whole number, multiplying decimals, and dividing decimals.

Spelling - This will be our last week of spelling. We will cover lesson 34. This lesson focuses on words with the suffixes ment or ness. SPECIAL NEWS: If a student misses 2 or less words this week they will not have spelling for the week. If they want to improve their score, they can take the spelling test on Friday. There will not be an alternate spelling group this week.

English - The children did a wonderful job on their poetry books. The grade for these books will be in the language arts gradebook.

Reading - We will begin our Chris Van Allsburg study.

Sulima's Scoop - Week of May 11

Weekly Reminders:
*Robert Crown Field Trip on Monday. Students need to bring a sack lunch and drink since we are eating lunch in our classrooms early.

Classroom Happenings:
Science - We will continue learning about sources of energy. The children will take an open book quiz on chapter 15 lesson 3 on Tuesday. For the remainder of the week, we will focus on how people use energy resources.

Social Studies - The children will work on their desert postage stamp project this week.

Accelerated Math - We will only meet for math on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday. On Tuesday, we will finish our "DynaMath Tournament." On Wednesday, we will be going to the computer lab to practice math skills. On Friday, the children will work with averages.

Spelling - Two more spelling lessons! This week we will work with lesson 33. This lesson practices words with the "tion" ending.

English - We have completed our final English unit. This week the children will be finishing their poetry books which are due on Friday. Your child needs 4 critiques written before Friday. I suggested Mom, Dad, Brothers and Sisters, Grandma, Grandpa, family friends. Read their poems and write a short comment. What was your favorite poem and why? What did you like most about their poetry book?

Reading - We will only have language arts on Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday. We will begin an author study this week - Chris Van Allsburg. Here is a link to a great website: http://www.chrisvanallsburg.com/flash.html.

Sulima's Scoop - Week of May 4

Weekly Reminders:
VERY BUSY WEEK....Sorry...we are running out of time.
*Lesson 32 spelling pretest on Monday (we are skipping lesson 31).
*Chapter 10 social studies test on Tuesday. Children will be allowed to use their book during the test.
*Harriet the Spy Test on Tuesday (open book/notes).
*Chapter 15 lesson 2 science quiz on Wednesday. This will be open book.
*Chapter 6 checkpoint review on Wednesday.
*Adverb/Prepositional Phrase test on Thursday.
*Jr. Achievement on Friday.
*Lesson 32 spelling test on Friday.

Plan Ahead:
*Robert Crown Assembly on Monday, May 11. Please have your child bring a sack lunch and drink. We will be eating in the classroom before we leave.
*Staley the Bear Assembly on Tuesday, May 12 at 1:30.
*Mr. Lee Presentation has been moved to the afternoon of Wednesday, May 13.
*Jr. Achievement on Friday, May 15.
*Fifty State Test on Thursday, May 21.

Classroom Happenings:
Science - The children will continue their discussion on motors and generators early in the week. We will take the chapter 15, lesson 2 open-book quiz on Wednesday. On Thursday, we will begin lesson 3 which reviews sources of energy.

Social Studies - Our chapter 10 open-book social studies test will be on Tuesday. We will also begin chapter 11 this week. The children will learn about the Navajo. They will also begin a research project on living in the dessert.

Accelerated Math - We will continue working with dividing by 2-digits. On Wednesday, the children will take a checkpoint review of dividing a 2-, 3-, 4-, and 5-digit number by a 2-digit number. We will take a test on chapter 6 on Tuesday, May 12.

Spelling - We will be working on lesson 32 this week. I have decided to skip lesson 31 because it is very similar to lesson 30. Lesson 31 reviews plural possessives. This was covered in English already this year. Lesson 32 reviews words ending with consonant + le.

English - The children will be taking the adverb/prepositional phrase test on Thursday. All enrichment will be due on the day of the test. We will review for this test on Wednesday in class.

Poetry - The children will continue to work on their poetry books this week. We will visit the lab a couple times. On Tuesday, I will be leading a lesson on one more type of poem. The children will write a poem this day. This poem will be added to their poetry book. Please note that poetry books will be due on Friday, May 15.

Reading - We have now finished reading Harriet the Spy. The children will be taking an open-book and open-notes test on Tuesday. They will turn in their books after they complete their test. On Wednesday and Thursday, we will spend part of our time watching Harriet the Spy. We will take time to discuss the similarities and differences between novel and movie.
