Sulima's Scoop - Week of Feb. 1

Weekly Reminders:

Homeroom Happenings:
Science - We will continue our unit on Physical Science. Our focus will be on sources of electricity. We will cover the concepts of potential energy, kinetic energy, hydroelectric power, geothermal energy, and solar energy.

Social Studies - We will begin our study of the Midwest Region. Our first lesson focuses on how the Great Lakes were formed and their importance to the Midwest.

Spelling - We will be working with lesson 20 words this week. This lesson practices adding suffixes (endings) to words correctly. Please practice your spelling words in cursive.

English - The children will take their next English pretest on Thursday. I hope to have the pretests back to the children on Friday. This will allow them to use the weekend to choose their enrichment project idea. I will then meet with each child on Monday, February 8 to approve their enrichment choices. We will begin this next unit on Wednesday, February 10.

Reading - We will continue working on reading extended response writing. The children will also be reading a biography about Gloria Estefan.

Sulima's Scoop - Week of January 25

Weekly Reminders:

Mr. Lee's Science Magic:
On Tuesday, Mr. Lee will visit our classroom for most of the day to do many activities with us on electricity. Please have your child wash their hair the day or night before. They should also refrain from using hairspray, gel, mousse, etc. Clean, dry hair will work best with one of the experiments.

Spelling Bee:
On Wednesday, the winners and runners-up from each fourth grade class competed against each other in a fourth grade spell-off. One of our classroom representatives, Declan, was one of the winners of the grade level spell-off. He will be representing fourth grade in the district spelling bee on Thursday, February 4, at 1:00. Congratulation, Declan! We wish you the best of luck!

Homeroom Happenings:
Science - We will continue to learn about electricity this week. On Monday, the children will take an open-book quiz on chapter 15, lesson 1. The children have been exploring circuits. Each child will be making a circuit puzzle that will be tested with a simple circuit. We will also move onto lesson 2, which will explore how electricity and magnetism are related.

Social Studies - On Thursday, the children will fill out a Midwest map. The Midwest test will be on Tuesday, February 9. The children will need to know the location and spelling of each state in the Midwest. Capitals will be worth 1/4 point bonus each.

Spelling - We will work with lesson 19 this week. Lesson 19 practices adding -ed and -ing to short vowel words that end in one consonant. Children should practice their words in cursive.

English - We will take this week off from normal English lessons. Instead, we will be working on extended response writing. Our writing follows this recipe:

*What I learned or general statement about the reading passage

Reading - The children will have their first book club meeting on Tuesday. They should bring their book and discussion sheet to the meeting. They will use these sheets to help keep the discussion going. The clubs will only meet for about 15-20 minutes. Throughout the rest of the week, we will be focusing on a review of reading strategies and literary elements.

Tuesday - No math today.

Homeroom Happenings:
Science - We will take our chapter 3 test on Tuesday. We will use the rest of the week to begin our electricity unit. The children will learn about static electricity, current electricity, circuits (series & parallel), conductors & insulators, and switches. The children will take an open-book quiz on this lesson on Monday, Jan. 25.
Items to review for chapter 3 test:
*key words - basic needs, adaptation, natural selection, instinct, hibernation, migration, learned behavior, fossil, petrified wood, living fossil, and extinction.
*Name the basic needs of living things.
*Explain how adaptations help living things meet their needs.
*Describe how instinctive behaviors help animals survive and meet their needs.
*Give examples of instinctive behaviors.
*Understand hibernation and migration.
*List examples of ways animals can survive in the winter.
*Describe how learned behaviors help animals survive.
*Give examples of learned behaviors.
*Describe how plants and animals have changed over time.
*Describe why fossils are important.

Social Studies - We will begin our visit to the Midwest region in a couple weeks. We will not be doing social studies lessons this week. Instead, we will double up on science lessons.

Spelling - We will be doing a review unit this week. There will be no pretest. The children will be assigned workbook pages each night. On Friday, we will be taking the different form of spelling test. The children will have to find the words that are misspelled. Your child should review all the rules we have covered in lessons 10-16.

English - On Tuesday, we will complete our last lesson on adjectives. We will also fill out our "how to study" sheet. Our test on adjectives will be on Friday. All enrichment Projects will be due on the day of the test. We will not begin our next unit for a couple weeks. Instead we will work on written extended responses.
What to review for English Test:
*An adjective is a word that describes or gives information about a noun. Tells what kind or how many.
*Adjectives can be found after the verb "be" (is, am, are, was, were). The noun is found before the verb.
*Use "a" or "the" if the next words is singular and begins with consonant sound.
*Use "an" or "the" if the next word is singular and begins with a vowel sound.
*Use "the" if the next word is plural.
*Add -er to adjectives that compare two things.
*Add -est to adjectives that compare three or more things.

*Use "more" to compare two things.
*Use "most" to compare three or more things.
*Never add -er and "more" or -est and "most".
*Change good to better when comparing two things.
*Change good to best when comparing three or more things.
*Change bad to worse when comparing two things.

Reading - The children will begin their first book club this week. On Tuesday, I will be previewing a group of books. The children will be able to write down their top choices. I will try to give each child one of their top choices. Book clubs will meet and set up a reading schedule. Most of the reading will be done at home. This reading can be counted on your child's 100 minute chart.

Sulima's Snowy News - Week of January 11

IOWA Testing Schedule:
The children will be taking IOWA tests of Basic Skills this week. Please make sure that your child gets plenty of rest and eats a good breakfast each morning. Since we will be testing in the morning and afternoon on Monday through Wednesday, your child may want to bring an extra healthy snack & drink for the afternoon. On Thursday, we will just take one test in the morning.
Monday - Vocabulary, Math Concepts and Estimation, and Reading Part 1.
Tuesday - Math Problem Solving & Reading Part 2.
Wednesday - Math Computation, Spelling, Capitalization, and Punctuation.
Thursday - Usage and Expression

Homeroom Happenings:
Science - We will work on finishing chapter 3 this week. The essential question of lesson 3 is..."How do living things of the past compare with those of today?" The children will take an open-book quiz on the information in lessons 2 & 3 on Thursday. We will also fill out a "how to study" sheet on Thursday. The chapter 3 test will be on Tuesday, January 19.

Social Studies - We will spend this week learning about the Civil War and then the Civil Rights Movement. Students will be taking a quiz on chapter 7, lessons 1-3 on Friday. We will not be taking a test on chapter 7.

Spelling - No spelling this week due to IOWA testing.

English - We will continue our unit on Adjectives. The students will work on making comparisons using "er" and "est". We will also compare with more and most & good and bad. English lessons will be on Monday, Thursday, and Friday this week. On Tuesday, January 19, we will fill out a "how to study" sheet for Unit 4. The test will be on Friday, January 22.

Reading - We will be reading and doing activities to go with a story from our anthology called Happy Birthday, Dr. King! This story reviews the beliefs and accomplishments of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Rosa Parks. This is the perfect story to read for two reasons:
*We will be celebrating Martin Luther King Day on Monday, January 18.
*In social studies we will be learning about the Civil Rights Movement.
What great connections we will be able to make!
