Sulima's Scoop - Week of September 7th

Thank You!
I would like to thank all of the parents who were able to attend Curriculum Night on Thursday. I enjoyed sharing information with you about the fourth grade program. I would also like to thank the parents who "volunteered" to come up and help with the presentation. You all did a WONDERFUL job - gold stars for all of you! For those of you who were unable to attend due to work, childcare, or other commitments, please look through the items that will be sent home with your child. If you have questions, please e-mail me or send a note.

Weekly Reminders:
*No school on Monday - Labor Day.
*Please remember to review the 4th grade policy sheets with your child and send back the signed slip ASAP.
*Lesson 2 spelling pretest on Tuesday.
*Lesson 2 spelling test on Friday (in cursive).
*Magazine Drive Kick-off Assembly on Friday.
*Back-to-School Bingo Night on Friday (Mrs. Sulima will be attending.)
If you would like to donate a new or slightly used backpack, you can have your child bring it to school, or if your child is attending Bingo Night on September 11th, the backpacks can be brought that evening.

Homeroom Happenings:
Science - We will continue our focus on inquiry and the scientific method.

Social Studies - The children will work on a patriotic quest. We are learning about the three levels of government: local, state, and national. The children are also exploring the three branches of government: Legislative, Executive, and Judicial.

Vocabulary - Due to the Labor Day Holiday, we will not be doing W.O.W. words this week. We will only do W.O.W. words on 5 day weeks.

Spelling - We will work with the lesson 2 words. The rule for the week is do not drop the silent e when adding ly. Please help your child practice their words (lesson 2 or alternate) in cursive.

English - Our first unit on capitalization and punctuation will begin this week. The children who passed out of specific lessons will be working on enrichment projects (in school) on the days that I teach the lessons that they have already mastered. English lessons will be on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday only.

Reading - The children will present their "how to" speeches on Tuesday. They should come prepared with note cards, that list the steps in order, and pictures, props, or other items. I want the children to have fun with this first speech! We will also continue to read Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing this week. I hope the children are enjoying this book. It is a book that always makes me laugh.

Accelerated Math Menu:
Monday - No School.
Tuesday - Continue to review using mental math to divide, estimating quotients with compatible numbers, and division with remainders.
Wednesday - We will take a 5-minute multiplication drill. The children will also take a check-up on estimating products, algebra, using mental math to divide, estimating quotients with compatible numbers, and division with remainders.
Thursday - We will review all the 4th grade concepts we have covered this school year by listing what will be tested on the 4th grade assessment that will be on Tuesday, Septemeber 15. The children will fill out their first "how to study" sheet.
Friday - We will review for the 4th grade assessment by continuing to practice division with remainders. Don't forget to bring your "how to study" sheet back on Tuesday for 2 bonus points on your 4th grade assessment. I will not accept "how to study" sheets before or after test day.
